This Student Of Fashion…

Its Kate Moss Day

Posted in Event, Fashion, London by fashionstudent on April 30, 2007

Yes is finally arrived. Kate Moss for Topshop is here. And while I must admit I won’t be buying any of it (even if it was possible to get my hands on it) a lot of people are trying to.

I had a lecture on Eco Fashion this evening at LCF’s Oxford Street campus and had to walk past Topshop to get to my bus. I’d walked past it at abou 4.30 and there were a few people milling about. When I walked past it at 6.30 it was like a scrum of photographers piled up out front. I should have photographed the chaos really, but at the time all I was concerned with was making it through without killing someone for getting in the way.

So I won’t be blogging the event (as I don’t give a stuff, out of principle) but for those who are interested take a trip over to Catwalk Queen. The madwomen are live blogging it.

Give It A Name! Festival

Posted in Diary, Gig, London by fashionstudent on April 29, 2007

My boyfriend I trekked over to Earls Court yesterday for Give It A Name festival. Don’t you just love Earl’s Court, it truely is like a large concrete underground car park. We arrived at about 3pm I believe after stopping for a large lunch on the way as we knew everything would be ridiculously overpriced when we got there.

Thank God we didn’t get there any earlier. The place was empty. And it was just dark and miserable while the sun was beating down outside. So we thought we’d buy a pint, sit down somewhere, chill out and watch the bands we didn’t know while waiting for the couple I was bursting to see in the evening. The only pints sold were Carlsberg and Tetleys. Yuk yuk yuk. And anything other than a pint of yuk was so ridiculously priced, so I had a Carlsberg, and it took me a good hour or more to drink.

Then the sitting. Well what few seats there were were taken so we found somewhere near the back to sit on the nice sticky concrete floor. Finding somewhere to sit wasn’t difficult as at this stage in the day only about a 6th of the room was actually a standing crowd wanting to watch the bands.

So this carried on through most of the day really. Pint of yuk. Cold hard sticky floor. Average or just plain awful bands. Overpriced everything.

Now see its sounding from the way I describe this that it was awful, and to be fair it was. But it was so worth the awful for the joy of the evening entertainment. The good started with Juliette & The Licks, Juliette Lewis’ band. Now while I have some of their songs, they aren’t something I really listen to, and as the most mainstream band on yesterday, they weren’t really a crowd puller. But that woman has so much bloody energy, she is absolutely worth seeing! Plus the brave woman had PVC leggings on, she must have been so so so hot.

Next was Fightstar, Charlie from Busted’s band. Not something I wanted to see so we went for a walk. And its just sods bloody law that the best picture I got of the whole event was of them.

Next…next was Alexisonfire. Awesome band. Meant to see them at Reading Festival last year but I’d just sat down with a pint and a cheeseburger and you know how these things go. Anyway yes they were very good. The crowd was growing at this point and there was even a little pushing and shoving, mainly by a very drunk ginger man who ended up lying on the floor. He got up again so it was fine! So yes, they played quite a few of the newer songs, which I don’t know hugely well but still enjoy, and then some of the older songs, which I love. I’m glad I saw them despite the fact that they didn’t play my favourite song.

And next, oh boy, were The Used. Probably my favourite band ever, its only the second time I’ve seen them live and both times I’ve spent weeks before hand hyper at the prospect. My plan had been to spend a couple of songs in the pit, have a dance, accumulate some bruises and then head out to stand with my boyfriend and actually watch the rest of it. But I had so much fun in the pit and went so mental that I ended up in there for the entirety.

The crowd had really built up by this point. And by that I mean Earls Court was probably half full, which is rubbish on one hand because there’s a lack of atmosphere, but good on the other because its easier to get nearer the front and actually see the bands, not just watch the screens. I got to 5/6 people from the front, in the crush, then headed back a bit for some space and a boogie. Found a beautifully violent circle pit and danced at the edge, which is my usual trick. But I let my guard down by taking the opportunity to actually watch the stage and took an elbow to the back of the head. At this point I must say I thought I was out, but I think sheer obsession and determination not to miss it got me through. And now I just have a large lump on my head as a souvenir.

Later The Used did their favourite trick of dividing the audience down the middle, like the Red Sea and then the audience charges each other as the song ‘A Box of Sharp Objects’ starts. Now as the audience pushes apart, a pretty spectacular sight in the vastness of Earls Court even with it only half full, there are tons of girls trying to push their way further out so as not to be caught up in it. Not this girl. This girl was heading for the front, if I was doing this I was doing it properly. It was ace. The whole place was one giant pit. The problem with it was the rubbish on the floor that was very easy to slip on when throwing oneself around like a madman, and the rather solid concrete that broke one’s fall. I may have broken my coccyx. But it was absolutely worth it. There was a video on YouTube that was a great example of this event but alas I cannot find it. I may post it if i happen upon it at another time.

Anyway, they were excellent. I had an absolute ball. And am a very happy, achey girl.

The final band was HIM. We sat and watched a little of them from further back, I used to like them when I was but a wee gothic girl, and so would be interested to hear any old songs. Luckily for us about 3 songs in they played ‘My Sweet 666′, which is a great song. I couldn’t remember many of the words, but thats ok because nor could the singer!

Then, to beat the crowds, (ha!) we left. Got the train and bus home, in time to see the end of Jonathan Ross. Ace.

Fresh Start

I hate Blogger. At first I liked it, but it gives you no real flexibility or control over your blog. So I’m moving here, to WordPress.

I started my WordPress blog at the same time as I couldn’t decide between the two, but went with Blogger. It was my boyfriend moving his blog to WordPress that made me re-investigate. From a blogging perspective this site is so much nicer.

Maybe I’ll actually use this one.
